JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: Advocate

Job Description  (January 5, 2017)

The Peace Institute is a center of healing, teaching and learning for families and communities dealing with murder, trauma, grief and loss. Our commitment is to transform society’s response to homicide so all families are treated with dignity and compassion. Our programs and services are grounded in the Center for Disease Control’s social-ecological framework that interventions are needed at multiple levels in order to interrupt cycles of violence.

After more than two decades serving families, the Peace Institute is recognized across the state and country for the best practices in the field of homicide response. Advocates at the Peace Institute are highly regarded for providing coordinated, consistent, and compassionate support to families impacted by murder regardless of the circumstances.

We seek an Advocate who is experienced at serving diverse communities and dedicated to meeting the unique needs of families impacted by murder. A strong candidate will be collaborative and communicative.

The Advocate will work closely with fellow program staff and report to the Director of Programs.The Advocate’s role will be to provide ongoing emotional and practical support to families impacted by murder as well as connect them to opportunities for healing and leadership development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain regular communication with families on case load via phone, email, in person, or mailing to check in on current/developing needs, communicating about healing events and opportunities.
  • Maintain up-to-date records for documentation of case activity
  • Collaborate with other agencies to ensure that appropriate referrals are made for needs such as mental health services, individual counseling, substance abuse services, housing relocation, additional financial resources, spiritual guidance, etc., based on the needs and wants of the clients.
  • Advocate on behalf of clients so that rights are upheld in accordance with the Victims Bill of Rights and MA Bereavement Leave Act, others as identified.
  • Work closely with Intergenerational Justice Program partners- VISIONS Inc., SPAN Inc., UMASS Boston, Criminal Justice System Partners such as Parole, Probation, Department of Corrections Victim Service Unit, District Attorney’s Office, etc.
  • Provide additional tasks as needed.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate is a resourceful forward-thinker with a minimum of 3 years of experience in the field of human services, case management, or advocacy. The successful applicant is also a highly organized, proactive, self-starter with excellent written and oral communications skills.

Importantly, the successful applicant is comfortable and effective at speaking in public to different sized groups and diverse audiences.

  • Is a team player
  • Is excellent at multi-tasking
  • Demonstrates confidence making strategic decisions about the best course of action in complex client matters
  • Capable of interacting diplomatically with a wide range of professionals including law enforcement, criminal justice professionals, other service providers, lawyers, community leaders, public officials, parents, and youth
  • Tactful and uses discretion and sound judgment
  •  Can travel for training opportunities when presented
  • Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole, and Haitian Creole speaking candidates are especially encouraged to apply.
